What is a trade union?
A union is an association of wage earners that works to protect and safeguard the interests of its members and negotiates on their behalf regarding wages and rights. The union provides advice on rights and obligations in the workplace and assists if problems arise.
The union pays sick day benefits and various grants, such as reimbursement for health efling, physiotherapy, psychological counseling, and a variety of courses.
Why do I pay to Efling?
If you work under a collective agreement Efling and SA or public entities (state, municipalities or nursing homes) you must pay into Efling. It shall be stated in your employment contract that payment is made to Efling.
The union area Efling is as follows:
- Reykjavik
- Kopavogur
- Seltjarnarnes
- Mosfellsbær and Kjósarsýsla to Botnsá
- Grímsnes and Grafningshreppi
- Hveragerði
- Municipality of Ölfus
- Hafnarfjörður (staff in restaurants and hotels and in industry)
- Garðabær (staff in restaurants and accommodation, in industry, in home services and staff at Vífilsstaðir)
According to the Efling laws, the duties in question are as follows:
- When loading and unloading ships and any other means of transport, as well as receiving and delivering cargo.
- During house construction and material transportation for construction projects.
- In port construction, road construction, trenching, agricultural work and material transportation related to the aforementioned professions.
- In the service of state and local governments.
- In home care, in kindergartens, in care in hospitals and institutions, in laundries and sewing rooms in medical institutions.
- For cleaning, sanitation, chemical pools and laundries.
- In cafeteria work.
- In guarding, security and financial transportation.
- In restaurants and accommodations.
- In the processing and sale of seafood and agricultural products.
- In industry and factories such as blacksmithing, shipbuilding, tinsmithing (barrel making), gardening, construction and heavy industry.
- When receiving and delivering goods, including drivers.
- At oil, gasoline, lubrication, fertilizer and rust prevention stations and tire repair shops.
- When operating trucks in the service of others and when operating heavy-duty work equipment, such as pushers, excavators and cranes.
- In energy-intensive industries, tunneling, power plants and other large-scale construction projects that are comparable to similar new professions.
- In any other type of production and transportation work.
- In seafaring and sailing.
How do I pay at Efling?
In accordance with the law and collective agreements, your employer must withhold 0.7% of your total wages and pay it as union dues to Efling on your behalf. The employer also contributes to uniun's sickness, vacation and education fund. How much is paid each month should appear on your payslip.
On My Pages you can see your status in each fund separately. Contact Efling if contributions are unpaid. Employers are, according to the law, obliged to settle all of the above payments.



Union representatives at workplaces
According to collective agreements, there should be a union representative at all workplaces with five or more Efling members. Union representatives play a key role in the work of Efling, and the union places strong emphasis on increasing their number, as well as providing them with effective education, training and support.

Negotiates wages and rights
Efling negotiates wages and rights of its members by making collective agreements. It signs agreements with SA, the state and municipalities, nursing homes (and others) that act on behalf of the employer.

Assists union members
Staff Efling at the Labor Rights Division assists you with various problems that may arise in workplaces and answers questions, e.g., regarding:
- Announcements
- Working hours
- Sick leave right
- If you have not been paid wages
- And much more, the list is by no means exhaustive.

Operates and rents out holiday homes
Efling owns and operates approximately 70 vacation homes throughout the country that you can rent out over weekends or weekdays in winter or for a whole week in summer.

Holds various events for union members
Efling holds various events for its members throughout the year such as a Christmas ball, cinema trips, May 1 coffee and more. Events are advertised on the website, social media and by email.

Supports training and professional development
Efling supports members in education and professional development with courses and training modules that enhance skills and strengthen your position at work. The courses are usually subsidized or free of charge for members.
