Practical skills assessment

get your experience valued and recognized

Do you have extensive work experience but have not completed formal education? A skills assessment is a way to have your experience valued and recognized.

In a competency assessment, what you know from your job is assessed and compared to the curriculum or requirements of the job. This way, you can receive formal confirmation of what you already know.

A practical assessment can:

  • Short-term studies
  • Make it easier for you to start studying
  • Strengthen your position at work
  • Referred to a professional letter

Who is the practical skills assessment for?

To take a practical skills assessment, you need to:

  • be 23 years old or older
  • have at least three years of work experience in the job to be assessed
  • have a short formal education

The assessment is free for those who have not completed upper secondary education or have had their education assessed in Iceland. Others pay for the assessment but can apply for a subsidy from the Vocational Education Fund.

How does this happen?

The process begins with an interview with a career counselor, followed by an assessment of your experience and skills. After the assessment, you will receive a summary of what has already been assessed and information about possible next steps.

Who is responsible for the practical skills assessment?

Practical skills assessment is carried out by accredited educational providers, for example:

  • Mímir , for preschool teams, club teams and support staff
  • From now on , for most apprenticeships
  • In the future , for paramedic programs, dental technology programs, and computer science programs

Efling does not conduct the feasibility assessment itself, but provides information and directs members to the right place.
