Validation of prior learning

Have your experience assessed and formally recognised

Do you have extensive work experience but have not completed formal education? Validation of prior learning is a way to have your experience assessed and recognised.

In validation of prior learning, the knowledge and skills you have gained through work are assessed and compared with a curriculum or occupational standards. This allows you to receive formal recognition of what you already know.

Validation of prior learning can:

  • Shorten your studies
  • Make it easier to begin studying
  • Strengthen your position at work
  • Lead to a skills certificate

Who is validation of prior learning for?

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be 23 years of age or older
  • Have at least three years of work experience in the relevant field
  • Have limited formal education

Validation of prior learning is free of charge for those who have not completed upper secondary education or have not had their education recognised in Iceland. Others must pay for the assessment but may apply for reimbursement from an education fund.

How does it work?

The process begins with a session with an education and career guidance advisor, after which your experience and skills are assessed. Following the assessment, you receive a result outlining what has been validated and information on possible next steps.

Who provides validation of prior learning?

Validation of prior learning is carried out by accredited education providers, for example:

  • Mímir, for preschool teams, club teams and support staff
  • From now on , for most apprenticeships
  • In the future, for paramedic programs, dental technology programs, and computer science programs

Efling does not carry out validation of prior learning itself but provides information and directs members to the appropriate providers.
