Purpose and objectives of efling Union
The Icelandic labor market has been shaped by the struggle of unions for justice and improved conditions for workers. For more than a century, unions have stood on the front lines in dealing with employers, demanding that working people recieve fair wages, security and rights. This struggle has yielded significant results, including a shorter working hours, increased sick leave rights, annual leave, parental leave, pension funds and numerous social reforms that are now considered fundamental.
Trade unions have not only made advances within the labor market but also in society as a whole. They have been a driving force for equality and social progress in Iceland, safeguarding the welfare system and contributing to the construction of a more just society in which workers' voices are heard. The struggle has always been about more than money; it has also been about dignity, respect, and the right of everyone to live a decent life from their wages.
Efling Union is today one of the largest and most powerful trade unions in the country. Efling members are the backbone of Icelandic society, they take care of its foundations, work in care, cleaning, tourism, service as well as a number of other workers' jobs. These are jobs that keep society going but have long been undervalued and underpaid. Efling fights for justice, equality and a fair share of its members in the value creation of society.
Through its struggle, collective bargaining, social action, and strong participation in public debate, Efling has demonstrated that unions are not only a forum for workers to defend themselves but also a force for progress and change. Through collective solidarity, the union has secured wage improvements, increased workplace safety, and pushed for greater social responsibility.
The struggle continues. Efling stands with its members in building a fair labour market where everyone can live on their wages with dignity, and a society where equality and rights for all are the guiding principles. Through solidarity and collective strength, Efling will continue to be at the forefront of social reform in Iceland.
