Employees are entitled to sick pay from the Efling health fund if they have paid into the health fund for at least six months before they become unemployed due to illness or accident.


The application must include:

  • A photocopy of a sickness allowance certificate from a doctor, originating from the health care and hospital computer systems. If you are also applying for daily allowance from the Icelandic Health Insurance, an original sickness allowance certificate must by attached to that application.
  • A certificate of employment signed by the employer stating the member's hours of employment and work rate for the past 6 months, the day the person lost their pay due to illness/accident, and how many sick days were used.
  • Completed form for using a personal discount.

Conditions for payment of daily sickness allowance


A member may be entitled to daily allowance from the sickness fund if he/she paid into the Sickness Fund for at least the last three months before he/she became unemployed due to illness or accident. Full entitlement is established after 6 months of premium payments. The right to daily allowance arises after the contractual right to sick pay from the employer has ended. Entitlements are transferred between members within ASÍ or BSRB.
