Efling 2026 Annual General Meeting - Warned of serious consequences as early as this autumn if no action is taken

General Assembly Efling of the union took place at Hilton Reykjavík Nordica yesterday, 26 March, and was well attended by union members.
In her speech under the board's recent report, Solveig Anna Jonssdottir, chairperson Efling, spoke broadly across the field and emphasized that the struggle of Efling members was nowhere near finished, indeed it never ceased. „We have achieved success – and we should be proud of what we have accomplished together. But at the same time we must face the many problems that are still unresolved,“ she said.
Sólveig Anna harshly criticized the state of housing issues and the impact of the interest rate policy on workers. She pointed out that a large part of the union members were forced to protect the majority of their income for housing costs and that would not be sufficient. “We have rejected the idea that we can wait for justice. We must pursue it ourselves,” said Sólveig Anna, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and the independent struggle of workers.
Then she warned about the proposed changes to unemployment insurance and said they send send “ominous messages“ to those who need support the most. She also criticized the lack of penalties for wage agreement breaches and called for legislation against wage theft.
At the end of her speech she emphasized that the patience of the workers was running out if real actions were not taken. “Either employers and the authorities listen to our demands and respond with real actions – or the consequences will become serious immediately in the autumn.“
Strong financial position and growth
Perla Ösp Ásgeirsdóttir, CEO Efling, presented the association's accounts showing a very strong position. Revenue increased by about 16% year over year and the deficit amounted to 4.2 billion krona. Income improved considerably and the year's operating result was 722 million krona.
The total assets of the association increased by approximately 1.5 billion krona and equity now stands at about 17.6 billion krona. It was then noted that costs had risen less than expected and the operation of the association is characterized by continuity and responsibility.
Í máli Perlu kom fram að lögð hefði verið rík áhersla á að efla þjónustu við félagsfólk og byggja upp innviði til framtíðar, meðal annars með fjárfestingum í húsnæði, upplýsingatækni og orlofshúsum.

Legislative changes approved
Proposals for legislative changes were also presented at the meeting. They aimed at the merger of two funds within the union and were approved unanimously without comments.
